The price comes down to the size and weight of the piece and the type of wall it's going on, because heavier items need stronger fixings and more time to get perfectly level.

What's involved in picture and mirror hanging

1. Find out what the wall is made of: plasterboard, brick, or older lath and plaster
2. Check where pipes and cables are likely to run before drilling
3. Choose fixings rated for the weight, not the ones that came in the box
4. Measure and level everything, so a gallery wall lines up properly

What can go wrong

• A heavy mirror on the wrong plasterboard fixing can pull out of the wall days or weeks later
• Newer homes often have dot-and-dab plasterboard, with a gap behind it that normal plugs can't grip
• Old lath and plaster can crack and crumble if it's drilled the wrong way
• Drilling blind can hit a water pipe or cable
